An understated entrance on busy Hollywood Road marked by a few flapping curtains hides one of Hong Kong’s most reputable sushi restaurants. Stepping into the very Zen and minimalistic oasis that is Sushi Sase is definitely something that you plan and not stumble upon considering the chef’s pedigree and the meal’s steep price tag.
Opened a few years ago by Satoshi Sase, famous chef hailing from one of Japan’s much-lauded sushi restaurants, Sushi Sase provides an authentic kaiseki experience and some of the best sashimi around. Grab a seat at the sushi bar with the other fish lovers and get ready for the show…
The Omakase is the way to go and at HK$1,580 (around $200) without drinks is serious business. You’ll be treated to some impressive knife skills and the freshest produce, delivered daily straight from Tokyo’s famed Tsukiji market. The offering changes daily but usually the Omakase consists of an appetizer, followed by sashimi (we had 6), then a hot dish, then onto sushi (usually 7-8 pieces) and dessert, all prepared with no fuss to let the amazingly fresh flavors shine.
Everything was amazingly fresh and the slow pace of having the chef personally prepare each individual piece before placing them in front of you allows you to really enjoy the food and whoever you’re sharing it with. Definitely a very special evening for some of the best sushi I’ve had in a while and the price is still way below what a ticket to Japan would have cost…so good deal in my books!
And then I got so engrossed with all that amazing sushi that I forgot to take pictures of the next 3: salmon, rock fish, and eel! Thankfully I remembered to pick up my camera for the last leg…
